About Us

Kontekst collective bases its work on the process of connecting critical theory and practice, the fields of art, culture and media with progressive social action. In continuous activity since 2006, Kontekst collective uses various forms and methodologies of research such as exhibitions, publications, works of art, (self) educational art and media projects, activist actions, and deals with deliberating about the conditions in which this production occurs and contributes to articulating contemporary social reality, political and economic relations and the search for alternatives.

In our practice, we engage in research carried out in collaboration with numerous researchers, artists, cultural and media workers, trade unions, as well as various progressive social and political actors. We organize educational programs and media productions, conceptualize exhibitions and artistic works, and realize them through collective and cooperative practices.

We began our work in early 2006 within the framework of a long-term project titled Kontekst Gallery. The project was initiated as part of the program line Forum of Youth at the Cultural Center Stari Grad, with the aim of transforming a section of this formerly socialist cultural institution into a space for autonomous education and research in the field of contemporary visual art and culture. Due to various pressures, including an official request to terminate the Kontekst Gallery program within the Stari Grad Cultural Center in 2010, we decided to close the gallery. This decision was largely motivated by our disagreement with the policies of the newly formed (neoliberal) cultural institution.

Between 2013 and 2019, together with a group of social activists, we participated in establishing and organizing the Social Center Oktobar. Within this space, we carried out a range of artistic, educational, and media projects, including Critical Machine and, in connection with it, the online magazine masina.rs, which we produced from 2014 until 2025.

In 2025, the Kontekst Collective initiated new interdisciplinary and collaborative research projects, as well as artistic, discursive, and curatorial practices addressing themes of spatial struggles, resistance to the exploitation of natural resources, the erosion of workers’ rights, and the fight for a dignified life — all of which are inseparably linked with feminist, anti-fascist, and anti-colonial struggles.
